留学中に書いた課題のエッセイです。
結果、コメントともに載せておきます。多くの先生たちはひどい悪筆でコメントを書いてくれるので、学生は読むのに非常に苦労します・・・。

■ International Politics and Security Studies (IPSS):
Critically assess the proposition that democracies do not go to war with each other. (4168 words)

初めて書いた本格的な英文エッセイだった。後で楽をしようと課題の中でも分量の多い制限語数4000～5000語のものを選んだ。文献をさらさらっと読んでいるときには「なんとなく」分かったような気がするのだが、いざ書こうとするときちんと理解していないため、途方に暮れてしまうという経験を初めてしたときでもある。
実際に書き始めてから書き終わるまでに10日以上を要した。途中で何を書いていいか分からず、途中でやめたいと何度も思いつつ、意地で仕上げたものでもある。途中からどうしようもない気がしてしまったのでコピーした文献をDemocratic Peaceに関して「賛成」「反対」に分け、引用していない文献から無理矢理一文を選び、自分のエッセイにパラフレーズ（または引用）するという作業を繰り返した。
一応完成はしたものの、取り組み方が分からず途中で論理崩壊に陥ったと思ったが、最後の一語を書いた瞬間はすがすがしかった。あまりのすがすがしさに、読み返すことすらしなかったぐらいである。他の友人はネイティブスピーカーに直してもらったりしていたようだが、僕の気分としては人に見せるなんてとんでもない作品だと思っていたし、ネイティブに見てもらっても一日で内容が改善するわけではないので、じたばたあがくよりも出してしまおうと思ったのだった。けっこう精神的に追い詰められていたとも、後になってから思う。やり直しを命じられても、自分の勉強になるからいいやというつもりで提出した。
従って、結果に関してはものすごく意外だった。通っても初回だからお情けなんだろうなと思い結果を受け取ると65点。単なるパスではなく、一段上のメリットをもらえたのだ。

Markers comments:
This is well-organised, very well researched and referenced, and deal with the key issues and literatures. The quality of English is generally good. The understanding + analysis is generally good, and some insights are powerful. At times, you probably rely too much on reporting the news of others; and would ***** from mere emphasis on eveloping your own synthesis. But this is only a matter of degree: you already be both.
This is generally a very good piece of work, and promises a high standard of writing through the rest of the year. (MC, JW)

■ Regional Security in East Asia (RSEA):
Discuss the implications of democratisation in East Asia for violent conflict and conflict prevention.

前回あれほど苦労したのに、経過は忘れ、結果だけが頭に残っていた。前回できたから今回もなんとかなるだろうとなめたことを考えてしまい、冬休みの前半を遊んで過ごす。SPCRのエッセイとこれの2本の課題を15日間でこなさなければならないことになった。
だいたい何を書こうかは考えていたのだが、本を読み始めておらず、本当に焦った（反省）。しかし、もう一つのエッセイが残っているため、とにかく一秒でも早く終わらせなければならない。というわけで、ネットで一気に検索をかけ、背景的な知識を得た後、ろくに本を読まずに書き始めた。書きたいと思うことを目次や索引から探し出し、それをパラフレーズする作戦だった。それほどこみいったことを書くエッセイではなく、事実を比較するような形のものだったので、結果的には6日間で終了。特に最後の日は一気に1500語も書いたので、やる気になればなんとかなるんだなということを実感した。
約3週間後にエッセイが返ってきたが、結果は悪くはないけど欲の出た今としてはちょっと不満。エッセイとしては上出来だが、焦点をしぼりすぎというコメントをもらった。もう一人の採点者（Peace StudiesのHead of Department)は「もうちょっと点をあげても・・・」と書いていたので、6月の点数の正式決定のときに少しは上がるだろうか。
「エッセイと言うものはトピックをいかにフォーカスして書くかだ」と誰かに指導を受けたため、きちんとフォーカスしてエッセイを書き上げたつもりなので不満が残る。

Markers comments:
This is a good MA essay in so far as it addresses the question in relation to Taiwan straits-coherent, well-informed and analytic. It would have been improved in these ***** if it had moredirectly focussed on analysing the specific impacts of democratisation on Taiwan-China relations, but focus is quite significant for a coherent answer.
However, The essay should not only be about Taiwan, but East Asia more generally. It should at least have raised and discussed the general **** issues of democratisation and security, and linked them to ***** of Thailand, Phillipines, Indonesia, South Korea etc., before focusing on Taiwan as a case study. The mark has been reduced because of this. (O. Greene)
Agree the ***** but suggest slightly high mark given *****. (SG)

■ Security and Post Conflict Reconstructions (SPCR):
Discuss the importance of truth commissions as part of a process of justice in post-conflict societies (with particular reference to South Africa or Haiti).

英語の微妙な言い回しや単語のニュアンスにものすごく苦しんだ。日本語に訳すと意味がほとんど同じだったりする単語は、その概念を理解するのが非常に難しい。前のエッセイよりは時間をかけて取り組むことができたのだが、4～5ページの文章の意味合いが微妙でどうしても理解できず（しかも、僕のエッセイにとって決定的に重要な箇所だった）、その数ページに1日半も費やしたぐらいだ。
結局きちんと理解できたかいまいちよく分からないまま仕上げたのだが、結果が伴ったということで、ある程度時間をかけてじっくり取り組むことがいかに結果につながるかを学んだと思う。

Markers comments:
This is a good piece of work which draws out some of the advantages, as well as downsides, of the TRC in South Africa.
It might have perhaps given more evidence as to why + how 'truth as acknowledgement' was a useful approach in South Africa. Has it led to more harmonious relations between former adversaries, and has the TRC significantly advanced the process of reconciliation in South Africa? The conclusions section could have been strengthened and some comments in more depth could have been made on 'how the lessons from South Africa apply more generally to TCs elsewhere. But, overall, this is a well-researched and written essay. (J.Ginifer, O.Greene)
