ブラッドフォードの治安

友人の誰かがロンドンに行くたびにスリの被害に遭ってくる。不注意なのは確かなのだろうが、手口もきっと巧みなのだろう。
一方で、「治安が悪い」と言われているブラッドフォードでは空き巣以外の犯罪についてあまり聞かなかった。夜遅くに友達の家から帰るときも、ブラッドフォードに住み始めた頃よりは気にしなくなった。

しかし、年末頃より急速に治安が悪化している。友人の一人が突然後ろからどつかれて、財布と携帯電話を取られそうになったという事件を聞いて以来（彼女は幸い、近くを通った人に助けられた）、同様の話が他にもあったという噂を聞いた。しかも犯行時間が深夜ではなく、夕食時が多いようだ。緯度がかなり高いので4時半には真っ暗になってしまうので、日が暮れた後は外出しないとすると、一日に行動できる時間が7時間ぐらいしかないことになる。

女性は大変だ・・・と思っていたら、大学の事務所からメールをもらった。「極東人」が男女に関係なくギャングに狙われているというものだった。
以下にそのメールを紹介しておく。

For your information...

Please be aware that there is, at present, a gang targetting and robbing, lone,
male, Chinese, Japanese and other Far - Eastern students.

There have been a number of incidents reported over the last four days. These
have taken place in the Summerville Road, Woodhead Road, Dirkhill Road and
Laisteridge Lane areas of Great Horton.

The offences have occurred between 18.00 and 20.00hrs

Two cars have been used in these offences, one, a new style, black Mondeo and
the other being a small to medium red, hatchback.

The descriptions of the suspects are of between four and nine Asian males, aged
between 16 and 20 years

In the most recent incident, a lone Chinese male was out on foot , when the two
vehicles pulled up alongside him. One of the four occupants of the black Mondeo
asked him for directions. Upon giving the directions, the occupants of the car
then demand the victims wallet, credit cards and pin numbers for the cards.
They also demanded his keys and his home address.
The victim was then pulled into the vehicle, driven around and assaulted, before
being discarded from the vehicle.

In earlier incidents, students also reported being hit around the head with a
long handled implement.

Please do your best to alert any students that you might come into contact with
about these incidents, and offer them the following advice.

It is unwise to walk alone in the evenings at the present time. Try and walk
home in a group.
BE RUDE! Keep walking and do not stop to give anyone directions!
Do not carry any large amounts of cash on your person.
Do not draw attention to yourself by using a mobile in the street
Keep to well lit areas

相手が凶器を使い、大人数であるということは、そのギャングたちに遭わないようにすることが事件を避ける唯一の手だろう。

近頃、学校近辺で何度も車の中から道を聞かれたのだが、何か関係があるのだろうか。
